Kabeerdaas ji is categorized as a saint but his thoughts and compositions are not confined to religion, spirituality, meditation and bhajans alone. He also deals with worldly life – the character and behaviour of individuals; practices (and malpractices) rampant in society; evils of caste system which divides people into ‘high’ and ‘low’ classes, etc. He also goes in depth in denouncing superstitions and hypocrisy prevalent in practice of religions and sects in general. He considers them as obstructions in the way of health, peace and happiness of society. We should take all these things into account if we want to understand and interpret Kabeer’s poetry correctly.
— Kusum Banthia
लाडू, लावन, लापसी, पूजा चढ़े अपार ।
पूजी पुजारी ले गया, मूरत के मुँह छार ।।
Laadoo, laavan, laapasii, poojaa chadhe apaar
Pooji pujaarii le gayaa, moorat ke moonh chhaar
Kabeerdaas ji believed religion to be an internal relation between a soul and God and was staunchly against outward rituals. In this couplet he is sarcastically criticising one such ritual of worship in which God is offered various sweets to eat. He says, innumerable delicious sweets are offered to the stone God who cannot eat. The pujaaree gathers and takes them away after the ritual while dust and ash are all that the idol receives.
Kabeerdaas ji is against the rituals and practices in the name of religion since they have no relation with religion as such . People make use of them only for selfish purposes.
Note:
Pujaaree — A pujaaree is a temple functionary who takes care of the idol and rituals related to daily worship.
न्हाए धोए क्या हुआ , जो मन मैल न जाय ।
मीन सदा जल में रहे , धोए बास न जाय ।।
Nhaaye dhoye kya hua, jo man mail n jaay
Meen sadaa jal men rahe, dhoye baas na jaay
In this couplet also, Kabeerdaas ji is criticizing rituals which have come to be attached to religion. Quite a few religions attach great importance to ‘holy’ baths in holy rivers or other water bodies. As Kabeerdaas ji says, a bath can clean only the surface of the body. Vices and sinful tendencies make their nest in human heart and they cannot be washed off by cleaning the body. That is why so-called holy baths do not serve any real purpose. He further argues that if the holy water had the power to purify, why the fish living in that water are not rid of their smell ! This proves that such rituals and practices are hollow and useless.
