Kabeerdaas ji is categorized as a saint but his thoughts and compositions are not confined to religion, spirituality, meditation and bhajans alone. He also deals with worldly life – the character and behaviour of individuals; practices (and malpractices) rampant in society; evils of caste system which divides people into ‘high’ and ‘low’ classes, etc. He also goes in depth in denouncing superstitions and hypocrisy prevalent in practice of religions and sects in general. He considers them as obstructions in the way of health, peace and happiness of society. We should take all these things into account if we want to understand and interpret Kabeerdaas ji’s poetry correctly.

ज्यों तिरिया पीहर बसै, सुरति रहै मन माँहि ।
ऐसे जन जग में रहैं, हरि को भूलें नाहिं ।।
Jyon tiriyaa peehar basei, surati rahai man maanhi
Aise jan jag men rahein, hari ko bhoole naahin
Kabeerdaas ji is an adept at conveying deep meanings through simple analogies. In the present couplet he explains the relationship between human soul and Brahma — the ultimate reality, through the example of a married woman visiting her parents. Though away from her marital home, she keeps thinking of her husband all the time because of the deep love she has for him. Similarly, the human soul also, even though dwelling in this material world, should never forget its connection with the Supreme Being — the Brahma.
छिनहि चढ़ै छिन ऊतरै, सो तो प्रेम न होय ।
अघट प्रेम पिंजर बसै, प्रेम कहावै सोय ।।
Chhinahi chadhei chhin uutare, so to prem na hoy
Aghat prem pinjar basai, prem kahavei soy
In this couplet Kabeerdaas ji speaks about the real and deep meaning of love. Love is not a fleeting emotion nor does it ever fluctuate or decrease. The emotion worthy of being called LOVE, is constant and dwells within the confines of heart without ever diminishing.
This is equally true of worldly love but Kabeerdaas ji here is referring to spiritual love — love of individual soul for the Brahma, the Supreme spirit.
