Kabeerdaas ji is categorized as a saint but his thoughts and compositions are not confined to religion, spirituality, meditation and bhajans alone. He also deals with worldly life – the character and behaviour of individuals; practices (and malpractices) rampant in society; evils of caste system which divides people into ‘high’ and ‘low’ classes, etc. He also goes in depth in denouncing superstitions and hypocrisy prevalent in practice of religions and sects in general. He considers them as obstructions in the way of health, peace and happiness of society. We should take all these things into account if we want to understand and interpret Kabeerdaas ji’s poetry correctly.

सतगुरु दीनदयाल हैं, दया करी मोहि आय ।
कोटि जन्म का पंथ था, पल में पहुँचा जाय ।।
Satguru deendayaal hain, dayaa karii mohi aaya
Koti janm kaa panth thaa, pal men pahunchaa jaya
Kabeerdaasji considers guidance by the Guru is essential, rather indispensable for a person who wants to attain siddhi, that is Supreme Knowledge. The disciple can comprehend the right manner of penance and spiritual practices and succeed in attaining Supreme Knowledge only when the Guru shows the way. Otherwise, he might try through billions of births and rebirths, but, without the guidance of Guru, he would fail to reach his goal. According to Kabeerdaasji, a real Guru is compassionate and reaches out selflessly to sincere seekers to make their journey smooth and swift.

सिख तो ऐसा चाहिए, गुरु को सब कुछ देय।
गुरु तो ऐसा चाहिए, सिख से कछु नहिं लेय ।।
Sikh to aisaa chaahiye, Guru ko sab kuchh deya
Guru to aisaa chaahiye, sikh se kachhu nahin leya
In this couplet Kabeerdaasji throws light on the qualities of ideal disciples and gurus. The ideal disciple is one who gives away his all to the guru. By “all” Kabeerdaasji does not mean worldly riches. According to him a disciple should wholeheartedly surrender his mind, thought, intellect, faith with complete trust to guru. If he feels himself to be a different and independent entity, his ego will stand in the way of absorption of the teaching of the guru. Similarly, an ideal guru never expects worldly advantages like money, position, fame, power etc. from the disciple in return for his teachings. Their relationship is a spiritual one with no space for worldly ego or desires.
