Kabeerdaas ji is categorized as a saint but his thoughts and compositions are not confined to religion, spirituality, meditation and bhajans alone. He also deals with worldly life – the character and behaviour of individuals; practices (and malpractices) rampant in society; evils of caste system which divides people into ‘high’ and ‘low’ classes, etc. He also goes in depth in denouncing superstitions and hypocrisy prevalent in practice of religions and sects in general. He considers them as obstructions in the way of health, peace and happiness of society. We should take all these things into account if we want to understand and interpret Kabeerdaas ji’s poetry correctly.
— Kusum Banthia
तिनका कबहुँ न निंदिये, जो पाँयन तर होय ।
कबहुँक उड़ि आँखिन परै , तो पीर घनेरी होय ।।
Tinakaa kabahoon na nindiye, jo panyan tar hoy
Kabahunk udi aankhin parai, to peer ghaneri hoy
Kabeerdaas ji believed in human dignity above all parameters of caste, religion or position in society. In this couplet he says, we should not speak ill of even a humble piece of straw we tread upon. It is possible that some day it may fly into our eyes causing great distress. He is using the metaphor of the piece of straw for the poor, disadvantaged people of society considered to be the lower class and generally looked down upon. Kabeerdaas ji is trying to tell that even such people may rise some time and take their revenge upon us. They are also human beings and we should accord them the respect they deserve.
कबिरा गरब न कीजिए,ऊँचा देखि आबास ।
काल परौं भुईं लेटना, ऊपर जमसी घास ।।
Kabiraa garab na kiijiye, oonchaa dekhi aabaas
Kaal paraon bhuni letanaa, oopar jamasii ghaas
It is seen generally that if a person accumulates some wealth, he uses it in luxurious lifestyle and magnificent mansions for himself. He also becomes pompously proud of this. Kabeerdaas ji advises such persons to remember that life is short. He should not be proud of his royal residences since sooner or later he will die. His body will be laid on ground. It will eventually turn to dust over which grass will grow. These grand mansions will then be of no use to him.
