Kabeerdaas ji is categorized as a saint but his thoughts and compositions are not confined to religion, spirituality, meditation and bhajans alone. He also deals with worldly life – the character and behaviour of individuals; practices (and malpractices) rampant in society; evils of caste system which divides people into ‘high’ and ‘low’ classes, etc. He also goes in depth in denouncing superstitions and hypocrisy prevalent in practice of religions and sects in general. He considers them as obstructions in the way of health, peace and happiness of society. We should take all these things into account if we want to understand and interpret Kabeerdaas ji’s poetry correctly.
— कुसुम बांठिया
चिड़ी चोंच भरि लै गई, नदी घट्या ना नीर ।
दान दिए धन ना घटै, कहि गए दास कबीर ।।
Chidii chonch bhari lai gai, nadii ghataa na neer
Daan diye dhan naa ghatai, kahi gaye daas Kabeer
Kabeerdaas ji always lays stress on values which enhance peace and goodwill in the society. In this couplet he is speaking about charity which spreads the values of humanity and equality in society. He says, if a bird takes a beakful of water from the river, it will slake her thirst but will not cause any dearth of water in the river. Similarly, if people with ample means spend some resources to help others, it will not cause them any problem but will be of immense use to the needy ones. Kabeerdaas ji says, your wealth never decreases if you spend it in good cause.
पानी बाढ़ै नाव में, घर में बाढ़ै दाम ।
दोऊ हाथ उलीचिये, यही सुजन को काम ।।
Paanii baadhai naav men, ghar men baadhai daam
Doou haath uliichiye, yahi sujan ko kaam
In this couplet too, Kabeerdaas ji is speaking about importance of charity in life. He says, when too much water accumulates in a boat, it should be bailed out without delay (because the boat might capsize because of the load). Similarly, if a good person comes to possess wealth more than his requirements, he should utilize it in charity (since too much wealth may lead him astray from a life of righteousness to a life of luxury and worldly pleasures).
