Thus Spake Kabeer 29

Kabeerdaas ji is categorized as a saint but his thoughts and compositions are not confined to religion, spirituality, meditation and bhajans alone.  He also deals with worldly life – the character and behaviour of individuals; practices (and malpractices) rampant in society; evils of caste system which divides people into ‘high’ and ‘low’ classes, etc.  He also goes in depth in denouncing superstitions and hypocrisy prevalent in practice of religions and sects in general.  He considers them as obstructions in the way of health, peace and happiness of society.  We should take all these things into account if we want to understand and interpret Kabeerdaas ji’s poetry correctly.

कमोदिनी जलहरि बसै , चंदा बसै अकास ।
जो जन जाको भावता , सो ताही के पास ।।

Kamodinii jalahari basai, chandaa basai, akaas
Jo jana jaako bhaavataa, so taahii ke paas

Kumudinee, a species of water Lily blooms at night. That is why, in Indian poetics, Kumudinee and moon are depicted as a pair of ideal lovers. In this couplet, Kabeerdaas ji shows that Kumudinee lives on this earth in some water body like pond or lake while moon lives far far away in the distant sky. Yet (their mutual love is so deep that) this distance does not mean a thing to them. If you really love someone you will always feel the object of love near you.
The message Kabeer daas ji wants to convey is, we cannot see the Brahman near us, but we should not feel Him to be distant. If our love for him is real and ardent we will always sense His presence near us, in fact in our heart itself.

माखी गुड़ में गड़ि रही , पंख रहा लपटाय ।
तारी पीटै , सिर धुनै , लालच बुरी बलाय ।।

Maakhii gud men gadi rahii, pankh rahaa lapataaya
Taarii piitai, sir dhunai, laalach burii balaaya

In this couplet also, Kabeerdaas ji takes the example of a house fly to show the predicament of people who, attracted by worldly pleasures, lose themselves completely in them, and by the time they realise how it has trapped them into a no-win situation and blocked their way to liberation, there is nothing they can do to get out of it.  The couplet says, the fly sitting on jaggery to enjoy it’s sweetness, has got stuck in it.  It’s wings, stuck with the substance are unable to fly.  It is struggling to get free without any success. Now it has realised the evils of greed.
