Thus Spake Kabeer 23

Kabeerdaas ji is categorized as a saint but his thoughts and compositions are not confined to religion, spirituality, meditation and bhajans alone.  He also deals with worldly life – the character and behaviour of individuals; practices (and malpractices) rampant in society; evils of caste system which divides people into ‘high’ and ‘low’ classes, etc.  He also goes in depth in denouncing superstitions and hypocrisy prevalent in practice of religions and sects in general.  He considers them as obstructions in the way of health, peace and happiness of society.  We should take all these things into account if we want to understand and interpret Kabeerdaas ji’s poetry correctly.

जब दिल मिला दयाल सों, तब कछु अंतर नाहिं ।
पाला गलि पानी भया , ज्यों हरिजन हरि माँहिं ।।

Jab dil milaa dayaal son, tab kachhu antar naahin
Paalaa gali paanii bhayaa, jyon harijan hari manhin

In this couplet Kabeerdaas ji talks of the situation when the human soul realises it’s true entity, which is in fact, Brahman, the Supreme Consciousness. The soul realises that it is not different from the Divine and just as snow, which is only water in another form, melts to become water again , the devotee soul also merges and becomes one with Brahman .
In this couplet Kabeerdaas ji has used the word ‘dayaal’ (दयाल — The Merciful One) which is often used as a synonym for God

पोथी पढ़ि पढ़ि जग मुआ , पंडित हुआ न कोय ।
ढाई आखर प्रेम का , पढ़ै सो पंडित होय ॥

Pothii padhi padhi jag muaa, pandit hua na koy
Dhaaii aakhar prem kaa, pdhai so pandit hoy

Kabeerdaasji believes that real knowledge is not to be found in tomes containing erudite information. But people spend their entire lives mastering them, and consider themselves learned person. Knowledge cannot be called as such unless it works for welfare of all living being. ‘Love’ is the only instrument for this, and that person alone who has mastered this knowledge should be called a ‘pandit’ (a learned person). In Hindi, the word for ‘love’ is ‘prem’. This word contains only two and a half syllables in Naagari script. Reading, understanding and following these two and a half syllables is more than worth all the words in the heavy tomes.
