Thus Spake Kabeer 07

Kabeerdaas ji is categorized as a saint but his thoughts and compositions are not confined to religion, spirituality, meditation and bhajans alone.  He also deals with worldly life – the character and behaviour of individuals; practices (and malpractices) rampant in society; evils of caste system which divides people into ‘high’ and ‘low’ classes, etc.  He also goes in depth in denouncing superstitions and hypocrisy prevalent in practice of religions and sects in general.  He considers them as obstructions in the way of health, peace and happiness of society.  We should take all these things into account if we want to understand and interpret Kabeer’s poetry correctly.

तेरा साईं तुज्झ में, ज्यों पुहुपन में बास ।
कस्तूरी का हिरण ज्यों, फिर फिर ढूँढ़त घास ।।

Tera sain tujjha me, jyon puhupan me baa
Kasturi ka hiran jyon, phir phir dhoondhat ghas

Musk is a strong aromatic substance which is found in the navel area of a particular species of deer. That is why that species is called Musk Deer. It is said that attracted by the strong scent of musk, the deer itself starts searching for it all around in the grass. It does not realize that the musk is in its own body. Kabeerdas finds it’s analogy in human beings. Oblivious of God’s presence in his own being, man wanders around searching Him, trying to find Him in rites and rituals of religion — worship, namaaz, counting beads, chanting and in places of worship like temples and mosques.
In place of external world, he should try to find God in his own heart. If he constantly thinks about God, chants His name and hankers for Him from the depth of his heart , he will surely find Him.

कहता तो बहुता मिला , गहता मिला न कोय ।
जो कहता वह जान दे , जो नहिं गहता होय ।।

Kahataa to bahuta mila, gahataa mila na koy
Jo kahataa vah jaan de, jo nahin gahataa hoy

In this couplet ‘Kahta’ (कहता – the one who speaks) is used for a person who preaches. ‘Gahta’ (गहता – one who takes/holds) is used for the person who not only listens to the preaching but also ingests it’s meaning and tries to mould his life according to it.
In this couplet Kabeerdas says, we come across lots of preachers but hardly any person who follows their teachings. And, ironically, many of the preachers themselves to not follow their own teachings. Obviously, their teachings then are only empty words. (They do not have the strength or authenticity of experience). Kabeer advises us to let such preachers go, that is, we should not pay any attention to their preaching.
In short, preachings are not just a matter of speaking and listening. Their real importance lies in applying them in our lives. In this, he also takes a dig at fake/hypocritical gurus.
