Kabeerdaas ji is categorized as a saint but his thoughts and compositions are not confined to religion, spirituality, meditation and bhajans alone. He also deals with worldly life – the character and behaviour of individuals; practices (and malpractices) rampant in society; evils of caste system which divides people into ‘high’ and ‘low’ classes, etc. He also goes in depth in denouncing superstitions and hypocrisy prevalent in practice of religions and sects in general. He considers them as obstructions in the way of health, peace and happiness of society. We should take all these things into account if we want to understand and interpret Kabeer’s poetry correctly.

कबीर दर्शन साधु का, करत न कीजै कानि ।
ज्यों उद्यम ते लक्ष्मी मिलै, आलस में नित हानि ।।
Kabeer Darshan Saadhu ka, karat na keejai kaani
Jyon udyam te Lakshmi milaai, aalas men nit haani
In this couplet, Kabeerdasji emphasizes two things. One, we should always be ready to meet saints, i.e., saintly and pious persons, and, two, if we want to succeed, we should shun laziness and exert ourselves with diligence.
Meeting saints does not mean just to go and see them. The real meeting happens when we pay attention to their teachings and try to follow those teachings in our lives. This requires constant alertness and efforts on our part. If we slack down on this, meeting them will be of no avail. In fact, every type of achievement or success requires this quality. For example, in our worldly life too we see that in projects like making money also, we succeed only when we keep working hard with honest commitment.
In short, for our spiritual well-being, we need to have close contact with sages, and to benefit from that contact we should devote ourselves with full commitment.

सब धरती कागद करूँ, लेखनि सब बनराय ।
सात समुंद की मसि करूँ, गुरु गुन लिखा न जाय ।।
Sab dharatii kaagad karoon, lekhani bas banaraaya
Saat samunda ki masi karoon, guru gun likha na jaay
Kabeer holds a guru in very high esteem. The true guru shows the disciple the path of salvation and opens the doors of eternal ultimate bliss for him. The disciple is delivered free from the entanglement of ‘Maya’ (illusion that is this world) and thus is rid forever from the sufferings of this world. This is the ultimate gift that can be given or received. That is why it is impossible to praise, to recount the greatness of a guru.
Kabeer says, the boundless virtues of guru can never be put down in writing with simple paper, pen and ink. If I use the entire surface of the earth as paper, cut down whole forests of tall trees to make quills/pens, and use up the water of the seven seas in making ink, still all this material will not be sufficient to write out the glory of guru in its entirety.
This, and many more couplets in this strain., show the great reverence in which Kabeer held the gurus. No wonder he bows to guru before bowing to God.
