Kabeerdaas ji is categorized as a saint but his thoughts and compositions are not confined to religion, spirituality, meditation and bhajans alone. He also deals with worldly life – the character and behaviour of individuals; practices (and malpractices) rampant in society; evils of caste system which divides people into ‘high’ and ‘low’ classes, etc. He also goes in depth in denouncing superstitions and hypocrisy prevalent in practice of religions and sects in general. He considers them as obstructions in the way of health, peace and happiness of society. We should take all these things into account if we want to understand and interpret Kabeer’s poetry correctly.

दोस पराए देख करि, चलत हसन्त हसन्त ।
अपने याद न आवई, जा को आदि न अन्त ।।
Dos paraaye dekh kari, chalat hasant hasant
Apane yaad na aavai, Jaako aadi na anta
In this couplet Kabeeraas ji is commenting on a very common weakness of human character. He says that a person tends to spot the faults and weaknesses of other persons immediately and keeps ridiculing them. But he never realizes his own shortcomings. If he would try to take stock of himself, he will find innumerable defects in his own character too.
Kabeerdaas ji wants to show that no human being is free of shortcomings. If a person, in place of finding fault in others, takes cognizance of his own faults and tries to correct them, it will not only purify his character/soul but his social environment as a whole will also show improvement.
दीन, गरीबी, बंदगी, सब सों आदर भाव
कहै कबीर सोई बड़ा, जामे बड़ा स्वभाव
Deen gariibii bandagii, sab son aadar bhaav
Kahai Kabeer soi badaa, jaame badaa swabhaav
In this couplet, Kabeerdaas ji shows that mere worldly wealth and power do not make a person GREAT. True greatness lies in his character/nature/mental make-up. If one is free of egotism, does not consider the underprivileged and poor people as inferior but treats them as an equal and gives them due respect, he/she can indeed be called great.
Kabeerdaas ji is here calling out the human beings to improve their character and also to banish inequality from society. According to him, peace and harmony can exist in society only when the feelings of egoism and differentiation between so called upper and lower classes are done away with.
